1 Preface
There exists a considerable variation in the approaches of European countries to the radiation protection education and vocational training arrangements for radiation protection. Furthermore, there exists diversity in the qualifications and diplomas necessary for the recognition of radiation protection experts as defined by the European Union's Basic Safety Standards Directive 96/29/Euratom. This diversity creates an obstruction to the mobility of radiation protection experts in the EU. However, the freedom of movement between member states of persons and services constitutes one of the objectives of the EU. This implies the possibility of pursuing a profession in a member state other than the one where these persons have acquired their professional qualifications.
Therefore, the EUropean Foundation on Training and Education in Radiation Protection (EUTERP) has been established. The main objective of EUTERP is to support harmonization in the field of education and training systems for radiation protection experts and to improve integration of radiation protection education and training systems into general vocational training and education infrastructures.
In order to fulfil this goal the University of Groningen and the Leibniz-University Hannover have initiated and formulated an apprenticeship as part of the 2010 Level 2 radiation protection course in The Netherlands. The apprenticeship was approved by the organizers of this course, the Technical University Delft and the Leiden University Medical Center. Three of us (OvD, JH and MG) participated in this course and have accepted the apprenticeship, that was supervised by the other authors together with Marcel Schouwenburg from the Technical University Delft.
The results of the apprenticeship have been laid down in chapters 1 to 5 of this report. After finishing and discussing these results the apprenticeship report of Haagen, van Dongen and Greuter was adapted and updated. It was also extended with relevant recommendations and appendices in order to increase the utility of the results of this project.
