IAEA Safety Reports Series 130 preprint: Education and Training for Building and Maintaining Competence in Radiation Protection in Medicine

The preprint of IAEA Safety Reports Series 130 is now available

Education and Training for Building and Maintaining Competence in Radiation Protection in Medicine

This publication provides international guidance on radiation protection education, training and competence for professionals involved in medical uses of ionizing radiation, aligned with the requirements of IAEA Safety Standards GSR Part 3. It emphasizes developing and maintaining knowledge, skills and competence to ensure radiation protection and safety tailored to various professional roles. It supports the creation of new training programmes—or the enhancement of existing ones—addressing specific needs in radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. It also covers training for referring medical practitioners, regulators, equipment suppliers and service personnel.

The approach aims to harmonize training standards globally, ensuring that professionals are equipped to practise safely as the complexity and volume of radiation use in healthcare increase. Core and detailed learning outcomes for various specializations are provided to guide education and training tailored to different medical fields.
